“People in South Africa do not realise how vulnerable they are when they get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle,” says Arnold van der Linde, MD of Integrisure Brokers.
Some motorists even think insurance is unnecessary. Others are of the opinion that they drive carefully enough not to cause an accident and therefore don’t need insurance. They also argue that all other drivers are insured and will be able to pay if an accident occurs. Mistake. Big mistake!
The fact is that not even half of the vehicles on South Africa’s roads are insured. That means if you are uninsured, you probably will not be able to claim even one cent.
It is therefore extremely important that a vehicle owner has comprehensive and trustworthy insurance. He then has peace of mind that he is insured – no matter what. It then becomes the insurer’s task to make sure he gets the money back, should the other party not be insured.
“If an individual handles the issue himself, court cases could take years and could even cost thousands more,” Van der Linde says.
