Sleep Easy with Ten Thousand Stepping Stones to Health
Walking 10 000 steps a day is the easiest and most affordable way for people over 50 to boost their health and fitness.

According to healthcare professionals the benefits of walking include improved sleeping patterns, less impact on the hips and knees and a reduced risk of developing lifestyle ailments such as diabetes.

The goal of taking 10 000 steps a day was first popularised overseas but it has been adopted in various forms by local organisations such as Run / Walk For Life which “was born out of an attempt to meet the needs of sedentary people as well as promoting general well being through exercise.” According to the International Fitness Academy walking is good for senior citizens with osteoporosis especially if they are new to exercise.

That it can be unsafe to walk in the street alone in South Africa can be turned into something positive if seniors turn their wellbeing into a social event and form walking clubs which allow them to meet their neighbours. You don't even have to do 10 000 steps in one go. You can accumulate steps during the day as you go about your daily activities.

One organisation which appreciates the importance of exercise amongst seniors is the IntegriSure Group of companies, a short-term insurance firm with years of experience in advising over 50s about short term insurance.

According to Arnold van der Linde, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the IntegriSure Group of Companies, ”Remaining active in life could reduce one’s risk because fit and healthy people are usually more alert than those who lead unhealthy lifestyles.”

An advantage of the 10 000 step programme for many over 50s who often find themselves cash-strapped, is that it’s completely free. However, if you wish to count your steps accurately and not just estimate them, it would be wise to purchase a pedometer. A pedometer is a small device that records the number of steps you take and they are available at many exercise outlets throughout South Africa such as Sportsman’s Warehouse. Research shows that using a pedometer properly will help you lose weight and lower blood pressure.

Bearing in mind that pain is a warning signal that something may be wrong, it is vital to consultant your doctor should you experience any unusual pain or discomfort while walking, especially chest pain.
