Your insurance policy: the ten questions you should ask
|
|
Consumers, when looking for vehicle or householder cover, often simply call and ask for a quote, making little or no effort to determine policy exclusions. If they’ve heard of, or had someone recommend, a particular product, this is also sometimes simply requested, again with no policy particular enquiries.
“Choosing cover suited to your particular needs, and having service provided by a reputable insurer, is essential. Questions therefore need to be asked,” says Lizette Erasmus, insurance products manager at the IntegriSure Insurance Group of companies, an authorised financial services provider offering specialised short-term insurance and other products for niche markets.
When requesting an insurance quote, it is advisable to verify certain policy information. Questions that consumers should be asking in order to make an informed choice when requesting cover include:
- Is the advisor an authorised financial services provider – it is against the law to provide insurance-related advice without being licensed to do so (licensing can be verified on the Financial Services Board website)
- Which insurance company underwrites the policy - is it a reputable insurer?
- How long has the insurance company been in existence – is it an established company or a start up venture?
- Who handles the claims process and do they have a 24-hour claims processing call centre or assistance service?
- What information do I need to provide - this could include home security particulars, information pertaining to construction in your home, who else in the family drives your vehicle, etc?
- What exactly is meant by ‘comprehensive’ – householders insurance, for example, may not automatically include cover for accidental damage due to power surges or hail damage?
- What warranties am I responsible for – this may include, for instance, having your vehicle tracking device or home alarm tested every six months?
- What changes in your personal circumstances need to be communicated to the insurance company – this may include change of address, contact details or a tenant moving onto your property?
- What basic cover extensions are available in terms of each section, as well as any additional cover options available?
- What excesses are payable on claims – exactly how much will you be paying out in the event of a claim?
Choosing the right insurance provider and the right cover option is essential to ensuring peace of mind. “You have the right to be informed, so ask before you sign on the dotted line,” concludes Erasmus. |
