Underinsurance Don't let this monster get hold of you!

If there is one thing that is constantly being discussed at IntegriSure, is underinsurance. The reason is simple.

If you are ignorant about it and we don't point it out to you, we let you live in a fool's paradise from which a rude awakening awaits you – and that we will never allow.

Whether South Africans want to know it or not, and whether we want to talk about it or not, there are hungry monsters out there, intent on devouring our hard-earned assets. We have to safeguard ourselves against that danger.

Two of the main monsters are inflation and crime. According to statistics, an enormous number of South Africans are underinsured. It’s not necessarily a matter of people deliberately underinsuring themselves. We believe that people simply don’t always keep track of the pace at which inflation erodes the value of their assets.

For example, a lounge suite that cost R10 000 five years ago, now costs R20 000. And insurers replace an ‘old suite’ with a new one. If you are only insured for R10 000, it means that you are underinsured by 50% and just 50% of your claim will be paid out.

“...otherwise I would have lost half”.

One of our clients admits that he was ‘very short-sighted’ because his household contents weren’t insured at replacement value. “I never realized that it would cost so little extra to be insured at full replacement value. I am just extremely grateful that nothing happened in the meantime, otherwise I would have lost half of what I own!”

Many people are deterred by the thought that it costs much more to be insured for an extra few thousand rands. But the extra premium is, in fact, nominal.
